A Step-by-Step Guide for DIY Brides
Why Flower Prep Matters
Before you even think about arranging your wedding flowers, there’s a crucial step that professionals never skip: processing and conditioning your blooms.
Skipping this step can lead to:
- Droopy flowers before your big day
- Poor hydration
- Mold, bacteria, or wilted petals
- Arrangements that fall apart under heat or time
Properly prepping your flowers will help them last longer, look fresher, and open beautifully for your wedding day.

What You’ll Need
- Clean buckets (preferably food-grade)
- Sharp floral shears
- Clean water
- Floral preservative (you can buy this or make your own)
- Gloves (optional, but recommended for roses or florals with thorns)
- A clean workspace
- Flowers in Bulk
Step 1: Unbox and Inspect Immediately
- Open your flower boxes as soon as they arrive.
- Remove any packaging (plastic sleeves, rubber bands, etc.).
- Check for damage, mold, or wilting.
- Remove any flowers that are clearly unusable.
Pro Tip: Some flowers may arrive looking tight or sleepy, this is normal. Don’t panic!
Step 2: Remove Lower Foliage and Thorns
- Strip off any leaves that will sit below the water line. Leaves in water = bacteria growth.
- Remove thorns using a floral stripper or gently snap them off with your fingers.
Why it matters: Clean stems drink better and reduce bacteria that can shorten vase life.
Step 3: Give Each Stem a Fresh Cut
- Cut 1–2 inches off the base of each stem at a 45-degree angle.
- Do this under water, if possible, to avoid air bubbles that can block hydration.
- Immediately place each stem in fresh water with floral preservative.
Step 4: Let Them Drink
- Let your flowers hydrate for 4–12 hours before designing — overnight is even better.
- Keep them in a cool, shaded space away from direct sunlight or heat.
- No AC? Consider using a basement, garage, or shaded room with a fan.

Optional: Make Your Own Flower Food
If you didn’t receive floral preservative, you can make your own:
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon bleach
- 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
- 1 quart of warm water
Mix well before adding to your buckets.
How Long Does Each Flower Need?
| Flower Type | Conditioning Time | Notes |
| Roses | 6–12 hours | Remove guard petals; hydrate well |
| Peonies | 12–24 hours | Will open quickly in warm room |
| Ranunculus | 4–6 hours | Keep cool to prevent wilting |
| Tulips | 4–6 hours | Store upright to avoid bending |
| Hydrangea | 12+ hours | Dunk heads in water if wilting |
| Eucalyptus | 4+ hours | Can be processed early |
How to Store Flowers Before Arranging
- After processing, store buckets in a cool space.
- Avoid placing buckets near fruits or veggies (they emit ethylene gas).
- Change water and re-cut stems every 1–2 days if storing for more than 48 hours.
Prepping flowers takes time and care, but it’s absolutely doable — and essential, for a successful DIY wedding floral experience. When done right, your blooms will thank you with full, open petals and lasting beauty all through your wedding day.
